Investors are ready not only to provide funds for cucumber and tomato production, but also for cultivation of pepper and strawberry.
The Governor of the Moscow region Andrey Vorobiyev shared the plans of greenhouse commissioning in the region. “I hope that a total of 80 ha of greenhouses will be put into operation in 2017-2018 and that will make us the leaders in the Central Federal district. We have projects to support – commercial cultivation of cucumbers and tomatoes”, stated the Governor. According to him, the investors started to implement the projects for pepper and strawberry cultivation in the Moscow suburbs. “We must support local producers of vegetables and fruit to provide citizens with fresh and high-quality products”, added Andrey Vorobiyev.
The president of the National Union of Fruit and Vegetable Producers Sergey Korolev in his interview with the journalist of “Agroinvestor” pointed out that a lot of investors who had already implemented greenhouse projects, suspended their work because of underfunding. “Shortage of concessional lending is observed, the situation with CAPEX is not clear. Investors wait for the decisions made regarding state support”, explained Korolev. Besides, such crops as strawberry and pepper are uncommon to be cultivated in greenhouses. “Such business is not profitable due to power consumption”, he said. Korolev mentioned the lack of energy provision in the Moscow region. To cultivate vegetables in greenhouses, it is necessary to use advanced extra lighting technologies, and this in turn makes the projects more expensive. “New technologies are becoming available – LED bulbs that reduce OPEX. The introduction of such technologies will enable to cultivate vegetables in greenhouses”, added the expert. At year-end 2016, greenhouse vegetable gross output amounted to approx. 1.6 mio. tonnes – 10.8% increase if compared with 2015. The output volume of cucumbers last year amounted to 64% – 524 thousand tonnes; tomatoes – 30.7% (about 250 thousand tonnes). According to “Greenhouses Russia” Association, by the beginning of 2017, the total area of country’s greenhouses equals approx. 2.3 ha, 600 ha of which were built during the last 5 years.
According to the opinion of the Deputy Director of Horticulture Department in the Ministry of Agriculture Denis Paspekov, in 2017 it is entirely feasible to commission 130-150 ha of greenhouses, but according to the state programme, 263.1 ha are expected.
